Changing your address is one of those moving jobs that sounds simple until you realise how many people need to know.
Most people focus on packing boxes, booking removals and getting the keys sorted. Fair enough. But if your address details are out of date, you could miss bills, official letters, bank documents or insurance updates.
We put together a simple change of address checklist to help you work through the main jobs before, during and after moving day.

3–4 Weeks Before Moving
Start with the things that can take a little longer or affect official records.
Royal Mail redirection is worth setting up early. It helps make sure letters sent to your old address still reach you after you move. This is especially useful for bank letters, pension documents, NHS letters, insurance updates and anything you may have forgotten to change.
You should also tell your local council that you are moving. Your current council will need your moving-out date for your final Council Tax bill. Your new council will also need your new address and move-in date, so your account is set up correctly.
HMRC should be updated too, especially if you are employed, self-employed, receive benefits or deal with tax credits. Most people can do this online through their personal tax account.
The electoral register is another one people forget. You need to register again at your new address. It isn’t just about voting either. Being on the electoral register can help with identity checks when applying for credit, finance or some bank accounts.
1–2 Weeks Before Moving
Once your move date feels firm, update your driving and vehicle documents.
If you drive, you’ll need to update the address on your driving licence. If you own a vehicle, your V5C log book also needs changing. These are easy jobs to put off, but they are worth sorting properly.
Next, contact your bank, credit card providers and any lenders. Even if you mostly bank online, your address still needs to be correct for security checks, replacement cards and official letters.
Insurance is another big one. Home insurance, car insurance, pet insurance and life insurance providers should all be told about your new address. A different postcode can sometimes change a policy or premium, so don’t leave this until weeks after the move.
If you are moving house with a confirmed completion date or tenancy end date, this is also a good time to finalise your removals booking, packing plan and any storage you might need.
A Few Days Before Moving
In the final few days, focus on the practical household bits.
Tell your gas, electricity and water suppliers your moving date. They may ask for final meter readings on moving day, but it helps to give them notice in advance.
Broadband and TV packages can take longer than expected, so check whether your current provider can move your service to the new address. If they cannot, you may need to cancel or arrange a new installation.
You should also update your TV licence, mobile phone provider and any regular subscriptions. Think about anything delivered to your door, such as pet food, meal boxes, medication, contact lenses, magazines or Amazon orders.
A good tip is to look through your bank statement for the last month. It will quickly remind you which companies you pay regularly.
Moving Day: Keep Key Details With You
Moving day can be busy, so keep your important documents in a folder or small bag that stays with you. This might include:
- passports
- driving licences
- tenancy or completion
- documents
- removals paperwork
- insurance details
- medication
- school or NHS letters
- meter readings
- keys and alarm codes
Do not pack these into the removals van by mistake. You may need them quickly.
Before you leave, take photos of your final meter readings. It is also worth doing one last check for post, especially if you live in a flat or shared building where letters can easily be missed.
First Week in Your New Home: Finish the Smaller Updates
Once you are in, there will still be a few address changes to finish.
Register with a new GP or dentist if you have moved out of area. Tell your employer, children’s school, pension provider, accountant, solicitor and any professional memberships.
Then update the everyday accounts people often forget: online shopping accounts, PayPal, Apple, Google, gym memberships, loyalty cards and food delivery apps.
This stage does not need to be perfect on day one. Royal Mail redirection gives you a bit of breathing space, but it is still worth working through the list while the move is fresh in your mind.
